Enhanced hydrological hazard identification based on basin-aggregated rainfall nowcasting

 

Objective: The rainfall nowcasts produced in EDHIT, and specifically probabilistic rainfall nowcasts, will be transformed into basin aggregated rainfall accumulations for the next 6h over the basins of more of 10 km2 in the entire Europe. This indicator, that is a step ahead over the previous prototype, will be the base for the development of an enhanced hydrological hazard identification tool based on rainfall nowcasts obtained from OPERA radar composites. The methodology will be compared with the European Precipitation Index Climatology (EPIC) methodology developed at JRC and used in EFAS with NWP rainfall outputs to propose an adapted probabilistic hazard identification using climatological thresholds.
